Summaries of carillons and other tower-bell sites
There are many ways to summarize the available information about
carillons, chimes, and other tower-bell sites.
We present here some simple tables and graphs which show averages, distributions, etc.
- Summaries for the whole world:
- a table of the numbers of instruments
of each type for each region or country for which indexes exist.
This might be considered a "master summary", since it counts everything in the
database which underlies this Website,
including those few sites for which data pages have not yet been posted.
- a table showing the average instrument size
for traditional carillons, by region (as regions are identified below);
it also shows the average bass bell note and average treble bell note.
The rows of this table are derived from the regional
"distribution by ... pitch" summaries identified below.
This summary also shows clearly how many of these important items of information
are yet unknown.
- a similar table showing the
average instrument size for
non-traditional carillons, by region.
- a similar table showing the
average instrument size for
chimes of all varieties, by region.
- a table showing the number of traditional carillons
and the number of keyboard configurations for each of four countries
and three regions of the world, grouped into categories by instrument size.
- a set of tables summarizing what is currently known
about the contributions of various bellfounders to the carillons, chimes
and other tower bell instruments which are recorded in the database
that supports this Website.
- Regional summaries for North America:
- a table of state or province vs. size,
for traditional carillons.
This also shows the total number of traditional carillons for each state/province,
totals for the region and for each size group, and some other miscellaneous
facts which can be deduced from the summary table.
- a table of practice console availability
for traditional carillons.
- a table of state or province vs. size,
for non-traditional carillons.
This also shows the total number of non-traditional carillons for each state/province,
totals for the region and for each size group, and some other miscellaneous
facts which can be deduced from the summary table.
- a table of state or province vs. size,
for tubular tower chimes.
This also shows the total number of tubular tower chimes for each state/province,
totals for the region and for each size group, and some other miscellaneous
facts which can be deduced from the summary table.
- a table of state or province
vs. type of instrument (traditional carillons, non-traditional carillons
and chimes).
This also shows the total number of instruments for each state/province,
totals for the region and for each type, and some other miscellaneous
facts which can be deduced from the summary table.
- the distribution by bourdon pitch,
i.e., numbers of instruments which start from a certain note
(regardless of size), for traditional carillons.
- the distribution of instruments by bourdon pitch vs. number of bells
and by treble pitch vs. number of bells,
for traditional carillons and
for non-traditional carillons and
for chimes and
for rings.
- tables of bellfounders' work
in traditional carillons and
in non-traditional carillons and
in chimes and
in rings.
- a summary by decade and founder -
the distribution of chime installations
according to when they were made and by whom.
