Index to carillons and chimes by Meneely (Troy)

The Meneely (Troy) foundry, which closed in 1951, provided bells for various carillons and chimes throughout North America.  It is not to be confused with the Meneely (Watervliet) foundry; though the families which operated the two foundries were related, there was intense competition between them.  Contributing to the confusion is the fact that Watervliet was known as West Troy prior to changing its name in 1896.  See the bottom of this page for additional historical notes on the origin and development of this bellfoundry and on the various names used by it, as well as links to related material elsewhere on the World Wide Web.

For an explanation of what this index contains (and does NOT contain), and of the additional details on each entry, see the Bellfoundry Indexes Advice.

Historical Notes:

The bellfoundry which we have designated "Meneely (Troy)" was begun by Clinton H. Meneely (1839-1923), youngest of the three sons of Andrew Meneely, on the opposite side of the Hudson River from the foundry begun by his father and operated by his brothers.  The names used by this firm are shown above, along with the years in which they are believed to have been used.  The two Meneely foundries had no connection other than the blood relationships of their principals.  They competed vigorously (and sometimes bitterly) with each other throughout their dual existence.

George Hazard Kimberly was related to the Meneely family through his sister's marriage to Clinton's oldest brother, Edwin A. Meneely.  The Meneely & Kimberly foundry was located on the east side of River Street, between Washington and Adams.  This was the third bellfoundry in Troy, and was located less than a block from the Jones foundry, which was then being operated by Octavous Jones.  Meneely & Kimberly cast their first bell in January 1871, and shipped it to the Catholic Church of St.John the Evangelist, Spencerport, NY.  The last bell from the foundry was shipped to St.Martin's College, Olympia, WA, in April 1951.  This foundry is one of a very few for which production records have survived.  In this case, they are apparently complete (though only in abbreviated form), and we have done a superficial statistical analysis, which is available here.

The interconnections between the Meneelys and their partners and the several Hanks bellfounders and industrialists are shown in a different manner on a Hanks genealogy page.

Video (Part 1, 9:47) of work at the Meneely bellfoundry.  Video (Part 2, 9:10) of hoisting a bell into the tower, playing a chime, blacksmithing, making small navy bells, a chime in steel frame, electric swinger, clock hammer, playing via chimestand, and playing via electric keyboard.  Both videos were posted by Dan Meneely, a descendant of the Troy Meneelys.
