Tower-bell instruments in the British Isles:

Countries:  England (UK), Ireland (Republic), Northern Ireland (UK), Scotland (UK), Shetland Isles (UK/Scotland), Wales (UK)

Click on any underlined country name above or county name below to go directly to that section of this index.  Within a country, sites are listed alphabetically by county and city; within a county, sites are listed alphabetically by city name.  (Counties not listed below currently have no entries in this index.)

Counties of England (using "ancient" boundaries in part):  Greater London (major London postcodes), Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Channel Islands, Cheshire, Cumberland, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Gloucestershire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire, Surrey, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire (There are 10 others.)
Counties of the Republic of Ireland:  Cork, Limerick, Louth, Monaghan, Wexford (There are 21 others.)
Counties of Northern Ireland:  Armagh, Down (There are 4 others.)
Counties of Scotland:  Aberdeen, Angus, Ayr, Dunbartonshire, Fife, Highland, Peebles, Perth, Renfrewshire, Shetland, Stirlingshire, Strathclyde (Lanark) (There are 14 others.)

If you are looking for a specific site by its institutional name (e.g., a church or school) or by the instrument's proper name, then use the "find in page" feature of your Web browser to locate a distinctive word (or partial word) in that name.

  1. For an explanation of the instrument-type tag at the end of each site link line, see the Instrument Type Abbreviations.

  2. Because of the local government reorganizations of 1976 and 1995-8, there are administrative regions which bear the same names as the centuries-old historical (or ceremonial or geographical) counties but have different boundaries.  There are also administrative regions with new names which have commonly been treated as if they were county names, though they are not.  We have attempted to extract consistency from this bureaucratic mess by relying on The Gazetteer of British Place Names from the Association of British Counties.  Most sites are listed here under the appropriate historical county name, the obvious exception being the central parts of Greater London, which theoretically should be regarded as parts of Kent or Middlesex.  (Note that Dove's Guide uses a somewhat different convention for listing places.)  When the various sources of information about listed sites used administrative regions to describe their locations, those regional names have been retained on the site data pages in addition to the county names.  The two-letter abbreviations used herein for the historical county names were chosen to retain the alphabetic order of those names, and thus may bear only accidental resemblance to any existing standard for such abbreviations.  Suggestions for improvements of all kinds will be welcomed; please use the email link at the bottom of this page.

  3. The chimes listed here are only a representative sample of the more than 300 chimes that could be included. But they should include almost all baton-keyboard chimes in this region.

  4. If you do not find here a city (or instrument) which you think should be listed, then check the page of sites that are no more for this region.  If it's not there, then please send a message to the Webmaster telling everything you know about it.

  5. Rings (tower bells hung for change-ringing) are generally not listed in this region (though they are in other regions of the world) because there are too many of them (over 2100 with 8 or more bells).  To find information about them (and about the relatively few which are elsewhere), see the online Dove's Guide for Church Bell Ringers
A few exceptions have been made for rings of 8 or more bells which can also be regarded as chimes, as follows:
    • When accompanied by at least one bell hung "dead" for chiming, they are indexed as a "chime/ring" (counting all bells), and they are color-coded as a chime on the regional locator map.
    • When equipped with an exceptionally interesting secondary mechanism for chiming, but no bells hung for chiming only, they are indexed as a "ring/chime", and they are color-coded as a ring on the regional locator map.
    • When there is another listable instrument at the same institution, they are indexed as a ring.
